Spring Awakening
Spring Awakening recently descended upon Orange County. I had the pleasure of getting a ticket last minute.
I knew nothing about the musical so I downloaded the soundtrack. Was pleasantly surprised to learn the music was by Duncan Sheik and very edgy. I also read the wiki so I had a better idea of what to expect.
Spring Awakening was written in 1891 by German author, Frank Wedekind. It pretty much touches on everything awkward, taboo and interesting. It features sex, nudity, abortion, child abuse and suicide. While I consider myself to be very liberal, I found the nudity didn't really add anything to the play. They could have done everything exactly the same, while keeping their clothes on, and it would have been just fine.
When did I get so conservative?
That being said, the musical was very relevant today though it was written 120 years ago. Apparently, not much has changed! I really enjoyed the music and would still be listening to it on my iPod if it weren't December and Christmas music playing non-stop.
If you have the chance, you should go see it. It has a lot of great points about sexuality and what is really important in the long run.
